The Story of Icarus
|
The Boy Who Flew Too High
Icarus lived in Crete with his father Daedalus, who was a carpenter. Daedalus worked for the King. One day the king was given a giant monster called a Minotaur. So, the king told Daedalus to build a barn to keep it in. Daedalus was afraid the Minotaur would get out of an ordinary barn, so he built one with curved and twisted rooms so he could not find his way out.
Icarus helped his father build this barn
with so many curves and twists that no one could find their way out. But, when they got the barn finished, they
could not find their way out. Icarus
said that they could make some wings and fly out. So, they caught an old goose and made some wings out of its feathers. And they got some wax from a beehive to
fasten them on with. Before they took
off, Daedalus told his son not to fly too close to the sun, or his wax will
melt. And if it does your wings will
flop off and you will fall in the ocean and drown.
They flew out of the barn and high up in
the sky. Daedalus flew hime, but Icarus
kept flying higher and higher, and forgot about what his father had told
him. After awhile he did fly too close
to the sun, and his wings fell off, and he fell into the ocean. Luckily, he was caught by a mermaid, and they
lived happily ever after. Click
