October 9-12, 2008: The Innovative Eighteenth Century

Conference Information

A draft of the conference program is now available.

This year's meeting will be held at the historic Skirvin Hilton Hotel, One Park Avenue, Oklahoma City OK 73102-9003. The phone number is 1-405-272-3040 or 1-800-445-8667(1-800-HILTONS). Our conference rate, considerably below the hotel's standard "rack rate," is $145/night for a single or double room, so make sure you mention that you are affiliated with MWASECS. In case you want to extend your stay and make a vacation of it--October is the ideal time for visiting this part of the country--the conference rate is good for three days before and after the dates of the conference itself.

If you are flying into Oklahoma City, the nearest airport is the Will Rogers International Airport (OKC). It is located about a 15-minute drive from the hotel. Shuttles one way cost $20 for a single person or $7 apiece for three or more (keep that in mind for your return journey!). Look for the blue Airport Express vans in the ground transportation area when you arrive at the airport. Shuttles from the airport do not require reservations, and you can pick them up at the curb as you would a taxi.

Registration for the conference is $160. Please make the check out to MWASECS and send it to the address on the registration form. This fee covers the following:

  • A year's membership in MWASECS
  • Tour of the Oklahoma City Memorial grounds Thursday afternoon
  • Continental breakfast and coffee breaks Friday and Saturday
  • Performance/presentation on that innovative eighteenth-century genre, opera, by Professor Kevin Eckard, University of Central Oklahoma School of Music, and "heavy hors d'œuvre" (plenty to make a meal out of) reception Friday evening at the Skirvin Hilton hotel
  • Banquet and plenary lecture on Ancient Feelings & Incomplete Journeys: A Chinese Woman Poet at the End of the Eighteenth Century by Professor Richard Serrano, Rutgers University, at the Oklahoma Petroleum Club Saturday evening
Myriad Botanical Garden and Greenhouse
Skirvin Hilton roofline
Chihuly Exhibit - OKC Museum of Art

Your registration fee does not cover the Thursday evening cocktail party on the roof of the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. Admission to the roof, which includes admission to the Roman Art from the Louvre exhibit, is $12 payable at the door. We will be walking to the Museum directly from the Memorial tour and will probably arrive sometime around 5:45-6:00 p.m. The exhibit is open until 9:00, and the cocktails will be served until 10:30.

Please note: Presenters who have not registered by the postmark deadline of September 9 will not be listed on the printed program, but may still be listed on the online version. The names of "no-show" presenters or presenters who have not registered by the time of the meeting will be removed from the online program. September 9 is also the Skirvin Hilton's cut-off date for receiving the conference rate.
