The South Central Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies and its current President/Organizer, Murray Brown (Georgia State University, Atlanta), invite you to participate in the Society's 2005 annual meeting on Saint Simon's Island, Georgia. The meeting is scheduled to commence on the afternoon of Wednesday, February 23 and will run through Saturday, February 26. The theme for the 2005 meeting is "Navigating the 18th Century," a maritime theme in keeping with the conference's location on the Golden Isles of Georgia's central coast. St Simon's Island is equidistant --some 80 miles--from Savannah and Jacksonville, Florida.

The meeting will be held in one of the region's best-regarded coastal resorts, The King and Prince Hotel, est. 1935 (here's a link to their official website--it will open a new window on your browser). It is the only hotel on the island that is located on the beach; the hotel has a magnificent dining room overlooking the Atlantic and is only a short walk along the beach (if tides permit) to the village of Saint Simon's Island and its famous lighthouse and excellent restaurants.

You may contact Murray with proposals for both papers and panels at tyrebeiter@comcast.net. Please feel free to suggest papers at any time through the deadline of December 10, 2004. If you have a paper that doesn't seem to fit in any panel, please submit an abstract and we will do our best to find a place for it. We will entertain all papers and proposals dealing with literature, history, language, art, and culture of the long 18th century.

The island is rich in colonial history and is the location (a few miles from the hotel) of James Oglethorpe's colony, Fort Frederica (est. 1736), the southern-most English settlement on what is now the continental United States.

SCSECS has a history of providing stimulating meetings in a relaxed atmosphere and the St. Simon's meeting will be no exception. St. Simon's Island is a charming and beautiful location with first-rate accommodations. Murray suggests that if you are a golfer, you should not miss this opportunity, but if you are a surfer, you might want to do that elsewhere (water temperature averages 52 degrees in February). The hotel has a beautiful beachfront pool as well as another indoors, but there is no surf to speak of.

We hope to have a guided tour of the Fort Frederica as well as a good time at one or two local music venues. At the moment, entertainment and outings are still in the planning stages.
